The recent enforcement of the Land Acquisition Act through an ordinance has started gathering storm backed by outcriess from the anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and his politicain turned buddy Arvind Kejriwal, with the former equating it with the "draconian" act of 1894 enacted under the British rule. The bill seems to strongly discredit Modi's promise of "Acche Din" which proved quite handy in turning the electoral plank in his favour but is now backfiring on him.
So, what is this Land Acquisition Act (LAA) all about?
Initially, the UPA government passed the LAA in 2013 in which it tried to bestow a few benefits upon the farmers, most important of which was about providing fair compensation to the land owners and the daily wage workers working on the land, but didn't own any. The farmers were given four times the market price of the land in rural areas and two times in urban areas. Seems fair till now, right?
